What is a BDSM whip?

The whips described in this article only concern “single-tail” whips, while other categories such as “nine-tail cats” and other floggers will be developed in another article.

A whip used for BDSM is generally a relatively short one.
They usually measure between 1m and 1m50, and more rarely up to 2m.
Longer whips will be used outdoors, as they require a lot of space to handle.

Most BDSM whips are “snake whips”, the name deriving from the appearance of the whip’s handle, which is very flexible and an integral part of the whip. This is in contrast to “bullwhip” whips, which have a rigid handle.

Various single-tail whips:

  • Bullwhip : American-designed whip with a short handle and a body (thong) that is often very long.
  • Snake whip : Whip with flexible handle, lengths may vary.
  • Signal whip : A small whip whose cracker is woven into the continuity of the body (thong) of the whip.
  • Stock whip : A whip of Australian design, lighter than the bullwhip, with a longer handle whose connection to the thong is a kind of knot.
  • Dog whip : Short whip consisting mainly of a long rigid handle, the fall and the cracker.
  • Qilinbian : Japanese martial art whip with chain body (thong).

Composition of a BDSM whip

Anatomy of the whip

  • Fall : Strap at the end of the whip, between the braided part and the cracker. It is generally easy to replace.
  • Cracker (Popper) : Twisted wire at the end of the fall. It’s the cracker that breaks the sound barrier, giving the whip its distinctive sound.
  • Thong : Braided strips forming the body of a whip.
  • Manche (Handle) : The handle of a whip, stiffer than the thong.
  • Pommeau (Butt Knot, ou Knot) : This is the ball at the end of the handle. It serves both as a counterweight to balance the lanyard and as a means of manipulating a whip by placing the ball in the palm of the hand to better control the movement of the whip.
  • Fall hitch : Knots that hold the fall at the end of the whip body (thong).
  • Dragonne (Wrist loop) : Often braided strap extending from the pommel at the end of the handle. It is used to hang the whip for storage.

Internal composition of the whip

It can be made from a variety of materials:

  • Leather : Hand-cut straps of various kinds, the most sought-after being kangaroo leather for its durability.

Advantages : Its distinctive look and feel, the flexibility of the whip deployment, the different weights available.
Disadvantages : Leather doesn’t take well to disinfection and needs to be well nourished to last over time. And the price, often high for a real quality whip.

  • Paracord : Paracord strands stripped of the threads they contain to give them a certain flexibility.

Advantages : More affordable price. Withstands disinfection very well. Allows a wide variety of shades and can even glow in the dark.
Disadvantages : More rigid than leather in its deployment. The weight is also lighter.

What is the ideal size for a BDSM whip?

Depending on the intended use, the size and weight will vary. The longer and heavier the whip, the more it will hurt and require more training. But also more space.
Conversely, the lighter and shorter the whisk, the easier it will be to handle, especially in tight spaces.

To find out the maximum size of BDSM whip you’ll need, count its length and add the size of your arm. The safety zone will be outside this length, in a circle around you. (If your arm is 3ft long and the whip 3ft, you’ll need to count 6ft all around you).

For this reason, the usual maximum size will be 5Ft (1m50) for the total length of the whip (corresponding for a snakewhip to a whip body size of 90cm, or 3 feet or 3Ft).

The minimum size for a BDSM whip will generally be 3.6ft (1m10) total length (i.e. 65cm, i.e. 2 feet or 2Ft for the body of the whip), to feel the sensation provided by the whip. Shorter whips don’t snap as well.

The difference between the actual total size, and the body size usually indicated when you order a whip, is a standard generally applied by whip sellers and users.
It’s explained by the fact that the body of the snakewhip won’t be changed, whereas the fall and cracker can.
Please note that these are extra charges.
For the whips on this site, both overall length and body length are shown for ease of reference.
